One of the points of discussion during the SXSW Q&A with Ed Snowden was the opportunity for innovative companies to make encrypted communication a simple “out of the box” experience because, as Snowden said, “The U.S. government still has no idea what documents I have because encryption works.”
This announcement by Vodafone Germany is a step down that path – I expect one of a rapidly expanding array.
Snowden said that encryption by default will stop the indiscriminate collection of information, but if the spooks really want to target your communications and your data, they will get you.
