This article demonstrates how human tinkering with plant DNA for a perceived benefit (leaving aside any other agendas Monsanto might have) can lead to unforeseen negative consequences. Those who study history know our track record of fiddling with nature is abysmal – amphibians are good example, with the spread of the so-called cane toad throughout northern Australia to the decimation of the global frog population caused by Chytridiomycosis due to the widespread presence across the globe of the South African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) which were once used for pregnancy tests (though there have also been some impressive successes).
